January is a great time to revisit the basics, so the following is an example breakdown of a 20,000 round season and how those rounds are divided between core, avid and casual golfers. Keep in mind the actual numbers may differ (hopefully, they differ a lot) from course to course but the percentages are pretty consistent.
Just to be clear…26,500 rounds is a good break-even number (average) for most golf properties. So if you are only hosting 20,000 rounds, you need to call MMC® immediately.
HERE IS THE BREAKDOWN:
100 core members playing 80 rounds = 8,000
40 outings a year x 60 rounds = 2,400 rounds in outing play.
200 avid golfers playing 30 rounds = 6,000 rounds
70% core and avid golfers plus 10% outing play = 80% (16,400 rounds) are being consumed by 40% of the golfers.
360 Casual Golfers playing 10 rounds = 3,600
So according to the numbers only 20% of the rounds are being consumed by casual golfers.
The only variable is leagues, e.g., 1,500 to 2,000 rounds.
There are only 660 unique bodies consuming the 20,000 rounds.
If you want to increase rounds and revenue, you must bring in new bodies! You must grow the game in order to “grow” your golf course and your career.
Your goal should be 50,000 rounds for a 30 week season. Why…because even in goal setting, the 80/20 principle (A.K.A. the 80/20 rule) applies. If you only reach 80% of your goal you’ll at least be hosting 40,000 rounds.
So stop putting the cart before the horse, i.e., where will you put all of those rounds? Instead, focus on acquiring those additional rounds and more importantly…those new GOLFERS.
