There is No Shortage of Golfers Just Inadequate Marketing
There is an old adage that says “If ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Unfortunately the “old” model for increasing rounds is broken and is in desperate need of fixing. Business is slow because courses are failing to adjust to the new generation of golfers. Millennials are today’s consumers and if you want to grow the game, your business and your golf career you had better learn how to engage this demographic with an offer custom designed to their buying patterns.
Millennials are digitally connected and rely on word-of-mouth (sharing) marketing. No one can argue that e-marketing, social media and digital marketing are fantastic platforms for getting your message out. The greatest challenge is getting the message to in-box and then to go viral. You must build a list by capturing the pertinent information and the only way to do that is by executing a full blown direct mail campaign.
Direct mail accomplishes what no other media can. Direct mail is target marketing at its very best. Every property has a draw of approximately twenty miles around their course; this is, of course your local market but more importantly this area is your bread n’ butter. Golf courses have a tendency to ignore or overlook this revenue source. Unfortunately they are so caught up in the old way of marketing focusing on the “highbrow crowd” they fail to harvest what is literally just outside their back door.
Launching a direct mail campaign will get you front-and-center with not only the Millennials but the Baby boomers, Generation X, and the Hero generation. Marketing to Millennials starts with building your lists. Then you’ll have the tools to join in on their conversations and work your way into their circle. Millennials trust their “friends” on social media more than they do traditional media but if you don’t first capture their information and learn how to package your golf in a way Millennials want to buy; you’ll never fix the problem.
