Last month I wrote and produced a vlog on demographic data. I referenced the 2016…
Most operators in the northern states push it hard FROM April 1st until Labor Day. They spend most of their season hoping they will get their rounds in, hoping they will have good weather and hoping they will have a job to come back to next year.
One of the most common missed opportunities operators make is waiting until after Labor Day to start worrying about the dismal season. By this time the business’ fate is already sealed. Within a week or two after Labor day most courses especially in the North and Midwest are going to lose about 50% of their golfers, by mid-October they will lose another large percentage and then when the time changes they will lose most of the rest of their golfers because no one will have time to even get 9 holes in after work before it gets dark. The only golfers left are the retirees and retirees don’t spend money on F&B, merchandise, range, etc. These are core golfers; the golfers who get out their calculators to ensure they can beat the system every year when it comes time to renew their membership and not spend another dime all year.
Marketing should be, and can be done year round. For example, MMC® rocks in October pulling-in great numbers during the off-season because our marketing is geared toward the casual and non-golfers. These golfers as a group play 10 rounds a year on average. These golfers are in it for the experience and are not addicted to the game. Marketing that targets core and avid golfers should be launched just before or during the season. Waiting until after Labor Day to engage core and avid golfers is a bad idea. Marketing plans must be drawn-up way in advance and launched based on the target market.
